Dog-friendly things to do in Charleston
Bringing your dog to Charleston? Here’s what you can do together, plus the local rules visitors most often miss.
1. Hit the beach at the right hour
Beach dog rules change by town and season. Folly Beach bans dogs 10am–6pm May–Sept and never allows off-leash for visitors. Sullivan’s Island allows off-leash mornings but requires a Town dog permit even for day-trippers. Isle of Palms allows leashed dogs all day plus off-leash windows. Full beach rules →
2. Let them run at an off-leash park
The City of Charleston lists 15 dog parks and off-leash areas, Mount Pleasant has 3 town off-leash areas, and county parks have fenced dog parks. Off-leash parks guide →
3. Grab a beer on a patio
Several breweries welcome leashed dogs outdoors. Check first: Holy City Brewing does not allow pets. Brewery guide →
4. Eat outside together
Many restaurants welcome dogs on patios and decks, from Folly Beach to Shem Creek. Mt Pleasant restaurants → or search all places.
5. Walk the waterfront
Leashed walks at Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park and the Pitt Street Bridge (both unverified listings; Town leash law applies).
Visitor checklist
- Bring your dog’s rabies certificate. Isle of Palms requires owners to have it on hand, and Sullivan’s Island requires it for the permit.
- Carry a leash at all times, even in off-leash windows.
- Never leave dogs in cars. County park rules prohibit it.
Leash laws to know
- City of Charleston: leash 8 ft max except in posted off-leash areas (City Code § 5-4).
- Mount Pleasant: leashed everywhere in town outside designated dog parks; dogs over 6 months must wear a rabies tag (Town Code ch. 90, Leash Up MTP).
- County parks: 6 ft leash except inside designated off-leash dog parks (CCPRC Rules, Section 8).
