How to Train a Service Dog: Behavior interruption and Disruption*
Answer to say: Behavior interruption Rule · Disruption Field (what the tags mean)
What the dog does: Breaks into a harmful or repetitive behavior, like skin picking, hair pulling, hitting yourself, or a meltdown, with a nudge, a paw, deep pressure, or redirection.
You'll need: patience, healthy low-calorie treats, short 5–10 minute sessions, and a marker word or clicker.
Steps:
- At home, teach a nudge or paw on cue (and Deep pressure, if you want it).
- Pick one specific, visible behavior to work on.
- Act it out on purpose in calm practice, cue the interruption right away, and reward.
- Over many sessions, drop the cue so the behavior itself prompts the dog.
- Teach the dog to keep going until you stop the behavior, then reward.
- For a child, have a parent act out the behavior, and give the dog a quiet place to rest.
- Practice in pet-friendly places.
Common mistakes: trying to train several behaviors at once.
Important: build any self-harm interruption with your clinician. A dog is support, not a crisis plan. If you're in crisis, call or text 988 or call 911.
When to get a pro: for children, and whenever self-harm is involved.
