How to Train a Service Dog: Seizure response

Answer to say: Seizure response Rule (what the tags mean)

What the dog does: During or after a seizure, it barks to get family, presses an alarm pedal, or lies next to you to help keep you from getting hurt.

You'll need: patience, healthy low-calorie treats, short 5–10 minute sessions, a marker word or clicker, a family member to help, and (optionally) an alarm pedal or button.

Steps:

  1. At home, teach each response on cue separately: bark on cue, press the pedal, or "go get [name]" (the helper holds a treat and rewards the dog when it arrives).
  2. Teach the dog to lead the helper back to you, and reward again when they arrive.
  3. Rehearse a pretend seizure: lie down the way you would, give the cue, and reward the response.
  4. Slowly fade your cue so the pretend seizure itself becomes the cue.
  5. Practice in different rooms and at different times of day.
  6. Practice in pet-friendly places with a helper who knows the plan.

Never rely on the dog alone. The Epilepsy Foundation says there's no evidence seizure dogs reduce the risk of SUDEP (sudden unexpected death in epilepsy), and they don't replace medical monitoring.

Common mistakes: only practicing in one room; not having the helper reward the dog.

When to get a pro: if your seizures are frequent or nighttime, work with a trainer and your neurologist on the plan.
